How much exercise does a Whippet or Cocker Spaniel need every day?
A big thank you to @alfie.cocker and @whippetface for letting us use their lovely pics!
Every owner know it’s really important to exercise their dog. But it’s easy to forget or get put off by a rainy day and most people just guess at how much exercise their dogs need.
Historically, most dogs worked and were often used for hunting or herding which provided them with plenty of mental and physical stimulation.
Nowadays, the majority of dogs are domestic pets but still need that stimulation.
Not enough exercise does two things:
- cause your dog to put on weight
- generates a bored dog (= unhappy dog)
- look for chewing, barking a lot, toileting in the house and over grooming (licking too much) – these are all signs of boredom
Everyone wants their dog to be healthy and happy without chewing up the carpet or pooping in the house! Based on the following chart from the PDSA whippets and cocker spaniels need 60 minutes a day + play time inside. Maybe not as much as you thought?!
This amount of time will vary by age and weight but it’s a good rule of thumb to keep your whippet or cocker spaniel happy. Check out our blog on dog sports for some inspiration on how to keep active.
And finally, don’t forget your dog needs to drink plenty when they have regular exercise…
How do Slurps work?
If your dog doesn’t drink enough or can be fussy when they’re out and about, Slurps can help. Made from all natural ingredients and high omega 3 fish oils, they are super tasty so dogs lap them up.
Just pour over food or give to them as a drink between meals. (Don’t add to water). Some people even make Slurps into ice cubes!
