Is my Rottweiler or German Shepherd drinking enough in hot weather?
As the weather heats up, it’s really important to keep your dogs healthy and hydrated. Pictured above are some very handsome Rottweiler and German Shepherd dogs @glasgow_rotties and @old_boy_max_gsd
On average, the above breeds weigh around 40kg (often more for male Rottweilers) so on cool days, they should be drinking roughly two litres or 4 bowls of water per day. On a warmer day, this increases by 50% to three litres of water or 6 bowls of water.
If your Rottweiler or German Shepherd Dog weigh a little more or a little less than our supermodels, the rule of thumb is that they should drink 50ml/kg bodyweight on a cool day or 75ml on a warm day*
Remember dogs are 80% water (vs humans who are 60% water) so a dog can dehydrate fast – particularly as two out of three dogs don’t drink the vet recommended amount of water per day**.
The key signs of heat stroke are:
- panting heavily
- drooling excessively
- becoming distressed
- appearing drowsy, lethargic or uncoordinated
By the time you’ve spotted signs of dehydration, it’s already very serious as this can cause serious organ damage and even death. If you see sunken eyes, dry gums, lethargy, weakness, collapse and loss of skin elasticity, you should contact your vet immediately.
